Plan your own commemorative event. From the last Friday in October to Remembrance Day, millions of Canadians wear a Poppy as a visual pledge to never forget those who served and sacrificed. The red flower also is the symbol of the Legion's Poppy Campaign, raising funds to support Veterans and their families in need. Many people wear poppies before and on Remembrance Day to show their respect and support for Canadian troops. Poppies are generally handed out free but often a voluntary donation is given in exchange. In the United States this day is called Veteran's Day and is also observed on November 11. Whether at the National War Memorial and Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Ottawa, or at cenotaphs in cities and communities across the country, this solemn day is an important occasion to honour those who have served, and continue to serve, our country. Remembrance Day is a federal statutory holiday in Canada. It is also a statutory holiday in three territories (Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut) and in six provinces (British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador). In Belgium, France, Martinique, French Polynesia, Guadeloupe and French Guiana, it is called Armistice Day. It’s called Remembrance Day in Canada, United Kingdom (as Remembrance Sunday), Isle of Man and Cayman Islands. The United States and Puerto Rico call it Veterans Day. Canada’s most prominent domestic war monument is the National War Memorial in Ottawa, which is the focus, on 11 November, of a nationally televised Remembrance Day ceremony, traditionally attended by the governor general, the prime minister, senior Legion officials and a large parade of veterans.
