Every year, Nov. 5 to 11 is Veterans’ Week, an opportunity for Canadians to honour the extraordinary efforts and sacrifices of our veterans and those who continue to serve. Remembrance Day, Nov. 11, marks the final day of Veterans’ Week and recalls the end of hostilities during the First World War on that date in 1918. From the last Friday in October to Remembrance Day, millions of Canadians wear a Poppy as a visual pledge to never forget those who served and sacrificed. The red flower also is the symbol of the Legion's Poppy Campaign, raising funds to support Veterans and their families in need. History and traditions of Remembrance Day and Veterans Week. Plan your own commemorative event. November 8 is Indigenous Veterans Day, when Canada honours First Nation, Metis and Inuit soldiers and veterans, and their long, distinguished legacy of serving in the Canadian Armed Forces. In Canada, November 11 is officially called Remembrance Day, but it is also known as Armistice Day and Poppy Day. Remembrance Day is commemorated in many countries, particularly members of the Commonwealth, including Australia and New Zealand (where it is also referred to as Armistice Day). This Remembrance Day, Canada honours our fallen heroes, Veterans, and members of the Canadian Armed Forces, the RCMP, and Canadian police officers from across the country for their service, courage, and sacrifice—at home, around the world and across generations. The act of Remembrance is one of the most important ways to honour and thank Veterans for their sacrifices. The Royal Canadian Legion is committed to ensuring Canadians never forget. We remember Canadian Veterans from all conflicts, as well as those who have made sacrifices on the home-front. Veterans Affairs Canada encourages all Canadians to learn more about the sacrifices and achievements made by those who served our country, and to help preserve their legacy by passing the torch of Remembrance to future generations of Canadians. The veterans’ protest became an annual memorial event known as Decoration Day, when graves and monuments of Canadian soldiers were decorated in flowers. For the next 30 years, Decoration Day was one of Canada’s popular military memorial days, commemorated on the weekend nearest to 2 June.
