On 18 August 1966, Australians and New Zealanders were outnumbered 10 to one in the battle of Long Tan. Vietnam Veterans' Day is commemorated on 18 August every year. The day was originally known as Long Tan Day, chosen to commemorate the men of D Company, 6RAR who fought in the battle of Long Tan in 1966. A national commemorative service will take place in Canberra next year, recognising the 50 th anniversary of the end of Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War.
