The observance originated in 1919 on the first anniversary of the 1918 armistice that ended World War I and was known as Armistice Day. What is Veterans Day? Fighting ended on the Western Front of the First World War on Nov. 11, 1918. Celebrations of the end of war soon turned solemn, in remembrance of all who were lost. The holiday that became Veterans Day was first observed as Armistice Day in 1919. The cease-fire that marked the end of World War I took effect at 11:00 AM on November 11, 1918, and U.S. Pres. Woodrow Wilson declared that the first anniversary of that event should be marked with a day of reflection and gratitude.
