The American Legion Family has called upon Congress to designate May 26, 2017, as National Poppy Day to expand awareness and provide support everywhere for all who have served and sacrificed in the U.S. armed forces. Known as the “Poppy Campaign,” veterans groups around the world have adopted the sale of the poppy to raise funds and recognition for Veterans and their family. In 1920, the American Legion adopted the Flanders Fields Memorial Poppy as the U.S. national emblem of Remembrance. This May 25th is National Poppy Day, a day rich in meaning for veterans and service members across the United States. How did the poppy flower come to symbolize the sacrifices of veterans? The widespread use of the poppy flower to commemorate veterans began in World War I. Like the blood spilled from thousands of soldiers, this poppy was red. The red corn poppy (Papaver rheoeas) was native to Europe and also was prominent in the Napoleonic Wars. “In Flanders Field” became an instant favorite all over the world.
