Vietnam Veterans' Day is commemorated annually on 18 August, which is the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan – one of the most significant conflicts for Australians who served in the Vietnam War. Anzac Day [a] is a national day of remembrance in Australia, New Zealand and Tonga that broadly commemorates all Australians and New Zealanders "who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations" and "the contribution and suffering of all those who have served". On this day we pause and reflect on service and sacrifice that Australian troops displayed throughout the war and commemorate all the battles fought by Australians in Vietnam, from large-scale operations to platoon and section-level encounters. On 18 August 2023, a National Commemorative Service was held at the Australian Vietnam Forces National Memorial on Anzac Parade in Canberra. It was a day to commemorate the service of some 60,000 Australian men and women who served in the Vietnam War, and the sacrifice of their families.
