Yesterday, we remembered all who served in the Vietnam War, our nation’s longest military engagement in the 20th Century. Our initial commitment began with the arrival in the former Republic of South Vietnam of the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam in July and August 1962. Vietnam Veterans’ Day (18 August) recognises the invaluable contribution of Australians who served and sacrificed in the Vietnam War. More than 60,000 Australians served in Vietnam from 1962 to 1973, with some returning for humanitarian operations in 1975. It was the single greatest loss of life Australia suffered during the Vietnam War. In the years that followed, you came together to remember your mates who were lost that fateful day. And now, we gather to commemorate all those who served in Vietnam. The first, to provide information of special or current interest to Australian Vietnam veterans. The second, to provide for students of all ages, historical context, information about Australia's involvement in the war, Australian units, servicemen and servicewomen. Vietnam Veterans' Day is commemorated annually on 18 August, which is the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan – one of the most significant conflicts for Australians who served in the Vietnam War. These events include commemorative activities such as ANZAC Day, Vietnam Veterans’ Day and Victory in the Pacific Day.
