Some people know that Emporia is the founding city of Veterans Day–an honor our town is rightly proud of. But fewer know the story of how that came to pass. It all started in 1953, when Emporian Alvin J. King proposed a name change. EMPORIA: THE FOUNDING CITY. Fifty years later, the city was declared the Official Founding City of Veterans Day by Congress on October 31, 2003. Former Convention & Visitors Bureau director Liz Martell and the All Veterans Tribute committee did the bulk of the work to gain Emporia this designation. Located in east-central Kansas, Emporia first observed Veterans Day — or as we often call it, All Veterans Day — a full year ahead of everyone else. Back in the early '50s, the country still celebrated Armistice Day, which marked the end of World War I. But many Americans may not know how the holiday came about: Its roots are in Emporia, Kansas. The idea for Veterans Day began through the efforts of Emporia shoe repairman Alvin King. Veterans Day was first organized and celebrated in Emporia in 1953. Kansas Congressman Ed Rees, also an Emporian, then took King’s proposal to Congress, and President Dwight D. Eisenhower, also of Kansas, signed the bill proclaiming November 11 as Veterans Day. Kansas is deeply and uniquely tied to Veterans Day. In 1953 Emporia, Kansas resident Alvin J. King proposed that Armistice Day (international day of remembrance) be changed to Veterans Day to recognize and honor all veterans from all wars and conflicts. In 1953, Emporia became the first city in the nation to celebrate Veterans Day, thanks to the idea of a local shoe salesman.
