In 1920 the red poppy officially became the national emblem of remembrance. Every year leading up to Memorial Day, Veterans at Department of Veterans Affairs medical facilities and veterans homes help assemble the poppies as part of their therapeutic rehabilitation. Anna Guerin was christened ‘the poppy lady from France’, and by 1920 her work had resulted in the American Legion and the Major Veterans Association in the USA adopting the poppy as a symbol of Remembrance. After this success, Guerin then turned her attention to Britain. She conceived of the idea of selling silk poppies as a fundraiser, and, in 1921, her efforts resulted in the poppy being adopted as a symbol of remembrance for war veterans by the American Legion Auxiliary and by Earl Haig's British Legion Appeal Fund (later The Royal British Legion). In 1922, Major George Howson founded the Disabled Society – soon renamed the Poppy Factory – to employ wounded and disabled veterans to make the poppies. Michael resolved to make the poppy a reminder of McCrae and millions of others who lost their lives in war. She mounted a long campaign that led the American Legion to adopt the red poppy in 1920 as its symbol of remembrance. McCrae did not live to see all this. The poppy has a long association with Remembrance Day. But how did the distinctive red flower become such a potent symbol of our remembrance of the sacrifices made in past wars? Known as the “Poppy Campaign,” veterans groups around the world have adopted the sale of the poppy to raise funds and recognition for Veterans and their family. In 1920, the American Legion adopted the Flanders Fields Memorial Poppy as the U.S. national emblem of Remembrance. Red poppies, a symbol of World War I from their appearance in the beloved poem "In Flanders Fields" by John McCrae, are sold in Canada and the United Kingdom on Remembrance Day to raise money... The red poppy became synonymous with the fallen troops during the First World War — and has remained a symbol of their sacrifice ever since. But the poppies adopted this meaning because of the war poem “In Flanders Field” written by the Canadian Physician, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae.
