Today is Vietnam Veterans Day, commemorating the 56th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan. This year also will also mark 50 years since Australia's final withdrawal from Vietnam. Some 60,000 Australians served in Vietnam, which was the longest conflict Australia was involved in during the 20th Century. Now we gather on 18 August each year to mark Vietnam Veterans’ Day, paying tribute to all those who served in Australia’s longest conflict of the 20th century. 60,000 Australian personnel served in Vietnam over more than a decade, which sadly resulted in 523 lives lost, and some 3,000 wounded. 18 August 2021. The National Commemorative Service on Vietnams Veterans’ Day was the culmination of a historic year, as we mark the 50th anniversary of the end of Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War. On 18 August 2023, a National Commemorative Service was held at the Australian Vietnam Forces National Memorial on Anzac Parade in Canberra. It was a day to commemorate the service of some 60,000 Australian men and women who served in the Vietnam War, and the sacrifice of their families. Vietnam Veterans Day 18 August 2024. On this day we pause and reflect on service and sacrifice that Australian troops displayed throughout the war and commemorate all the battles fought by Australians in Vietnam, from large-scale operations to platoon and section-level encounters. From 10am on Vietnam Veterans’ Day (18 August) 2023, the Australian Government will host a national 50th anniversary commemorative service at the Australian Vietnam Forces National Memorial in Canberra.
