Just a few days later, on June 1, Congress altered the formal name of the holiday from “Armistice Day” to “Veterans Day.” Public Law 83-380, honoring veterans on the 11th day of November of each year, a day dedicated to world peace, June 1, 1954. The Uniform Holiday Bill (Public Law 90-363 (82 Stat. 250)) was signed on June 28, 1968, and was intended to ensure three-day weekends for Federal employees by celebrating four national holidays on Mondays: Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Columbus Day. Veterans Day, in the United States, national holiday (November 11) honouring veterans of the armed forces and those killed in the country’s wars. The observance originated in 1919 on the first anniversary of the 1918 armistice that ended World War I and was known as Armistice Day. The theme for Veterans Day 2024 is “A Legacy of Loyalty and Service”, and this year’s winning poster was designed by Myisha Godette, a retired, disabled Army Veteran from Queens, New York.
