Ottawa — Veterans Affairs Canada issued the following statement to mark September 3, Merchant Navy Veterans Day: Throughout major world conflicts, Canada’s Merchant Navy was imperative to the cause. Merchant Navy: Seven unidentified Canadian merchant sailors who survived the sinking of the armed merchant cruiser H.M.S. Jervis Bay by the German battleship Admiral Scheer, while escorting a trans-Atlantic convoy on 5 November 1940, during the Second World War. On September 3, 2024, Merchant Navy Veterans Day was jointly commemorated across Canada at the following locations: (Halifax) The Honourable Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Minister, Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), placed a wreath at the National Canadian Merchant Navy Monument (Halifax Waterfront). Mr. Ng also said, “On Veterans Day, America honors U.S. Merchant Marine veterans of WWII and all other U.S. Merchant Mariners who served our Nation in times of peace and war, including military sealift support during the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and six Expeditionary Operations in the Middle East and Northeast Africa. November 11 was recognized as Armistice Day, a day to honor veterans of the most destructive war in history. It was made a legal holiday in 1938. In 1954, it was renamed Veterans Day to honor U.S. veterans of all conflicts.
